Modern/Contemporary Style Home Décor

Modern/contemporary style home décor calls for combining retro 50s and angular designs with minimalistic and futuristic design concepts.
The combination of good style and function is the hallmark of any modern/contemporary style of home décor. A lot of people often use the terms modern and contemporary in the same vein; however, in the world of interior design and décor modern refers to a unique middle of the 20th century feel while the term contemporary refers to any present day design influence. Here are some tips on how to decorate your home using modern/contemporary décor.
When it comes to features contemporary décor calls for utilizing clean lines, minimalistic aesthetics, reflective characteristics and use of innovations in design technology. Modern décor calls for the use of geometric artwork, angular frames and low profiles. When you use the combination of modern and contemporary décor in your home you will have to incorporate all of these features in the pieces you purchase. Modern décor includes vintage pieces from the 1950s, which may call for the use of Formica, ottomans and Eames chairs. This is then combined with minimalistic aesthetics found in contemporary design such as modular shelving or say pod-like seats in order to give the living space a retro and futuristic aesthetic.
Probably the biggest contribution of contemporary design and décor that makes it distinct from the modern style is the green component. A lot of the new contemporary interior décor products often use materials that have been recycled from something else. They may also use sustainable products such as bamboo.
As mentioned above, excellent design is the hallmark of any contemporary interior décor. The pieces are functional and mainly devoid of clutter. This makes modern interior décor the best contrast for the minimalistic pieces that sometimes can be misconstrued as sterile.
Minimalistic and Modern
If you want to decorate your living space with modern/contemporary features, you can combine your minimalistic furniture with modern accents such as throw pillows. Hang pictures on the wall using metal or other reflective materials. You can add a modern style rug on the floor to give the room that energy it needs to stand out from the rest.
While using modern/contemporary décor for your home, choose pieces that offer abstract or geometric artwork such as accent pieces. Ottomans can double as storage furniture and can be covered with genuine leather to give it that modern look and style. You can place it at the end of the bed or your sofa in order to complete the look. These are just some of the things that can aid you in giving your home that modern/contemporary feel to it.

Cool Storage Idea

Everyone I know has a problem storing clutter in their home. You know the stuff you take on and off all day long like coats and shoes, especially if you live in a cold climate. No one wants to put these things away and get them out 10 min later. So after some surfing on the internet and browsing through some magazines I have come up with an idea. If you have a garage make it a habit for the family to enter and leave through the garage as much as possible. And turn the wall just as you enter the house into a storage spot for these items. When I was growing up we had to enter through the utility room and leave all these outdoor items in the utility room. Some homes have a mud room but for those of us that only have a garage use that wall.

Build a shelving unit on the wall with cubby holes for shoes and boots. Next to that build an open cabinet (like in the picture) with dividers so each person has their own space. Here they can put their coat, scarfs etc. And like this picture you can have cubbies beneath with baskets for things that each person needs to take with them. (After I build this in my garage I will post a picture but something like this is what I am thinking.)

Kids could put their back pack in the night before school; no more last minute scramble in the morning. I always have items I need to return to stores that I leave at the front door but would much rather put them in a basket. And add a bench to sit on while putting on your shoes.  Above this space you could still have shelves for other storage; it would be too high to reach daily but would be great for Christmas decorations and things like that.

Happy Storage!!!
